Neck
surgery

Over time, your neck changes and begins to sag. Then plastic surgery will help restore the aesthetic appearance of your neck.

Take a look at a person’s neck to find out his/her true age. Your neck skin—even if you stick to your daily skincare routine and do special exercises—seems to be ageing faster than your facial skin. Neck plastic surgery is performed to reshape its contours aesthetically. Such surgery can be a stand-alone procedure, but you can achieve the best results by undergoing double chin surgery and facelift at the same time.

What is platysmaplasty?

The platysma is a flat subcutaneous muscle which covers the anterior and anterolateral parts of the neck. It’s attached to the lower jaw, collarbones, and breastbone. The platysma doesn’t cover only a narrow strip in the middle of the anterior triangle of the neck and the junction of the collarbones and breastbone.

Modern plastic surgery considers platysmaplasty to be a procedure which tightens and reposition the muscle fibres of the platysma along the central part of the neck (medial platysmaplasty). It helps restore a youthful appearance of your neck with a sharper chin angle and get rid of skin laxity, transverse wrinkles (Venus’s rings), and platysmal bands. Such surgery is most often performed in conjunction with neck liposuction.

Our experience

Before

surgery

At the first consultation, our plastic surgeon will carefully listen to all of your preferences, set realistic expectations for surgery, predict its efficiency, and answer all of your questions in detail. At the preoperative evaluation, you undergo the complete body check-up and have all of the necessary tests.
During

surgery

Performed under general anaesthesia, the procedure takes 1–2 hours. The surgeon removes excess skin and fat and corrects the contours of your neck and the lower third of your face. Our expert restores not only an aesthetic shape to your neck but also your tissue elasticity and muscle activity.
After

surgery

The doctor will apply a wrapping bandage right after surgery. It must be worn for 5 days. You spend a day under the round-the-clock care of our expert and then can return home on the second day. Anyway, you must follow all of your surgeon’s recommendations and come to Grace Clinic for dressings according to your individual schedule.

Our approach to neck lifts

Our approach to neck lifts

Time dramatically affects the appearance of your neck. Age-related changes cause laxity, saggy skin, and deformed contours of your lower face. Therefore, we offer you to undergo neck lift surgery.
At the first consultation, our expert examines your neck and chooses the optimal correction technique. If there are no clear indications for surgery, our surgeon can offer alternative cosmetic correction techniques. The results must match your expectations. If indicated, neck rejuvenation can be performed in conjunction with chin or face liposuction and/or lift.

Q&A

At what age can I undergo neck lift surgery?

Our experts recommend that you undergo neck lift surgery at the age of 35 and older. From this time forward, your metabolism slows down, the skin becomes dull and saggier, and you notice wrinkles, nasolabial folds, a double chin, and deformed facial contours. If you’re younger and have indications for surgery, our expert will consult you. Once your check-up is complete, you can undergo neck lift surgery if you have no contraindications.

What are the contraindications to neck lift surgery?

Neck lift surgery is contraindicated if you have unsatisfactory test results and the following problems: high blood pressure; any cardiovascular diseases; diabetes mellitus; thyroid disorders; clotting disorders; diseases of internal organs; oncological diseases; infectious diseases; exacerbated chronic diseases; major mechanical damage to the skin of the neck and chin.

Can I apply dressings all by myself?

Our experts don’t recommend applying dressings by yourself. During the first 14 days, you must come to Grace Clinic for examination and dressings. During this period, our expert will be able to evaluate your rehabilitation and whether your stitches are healing correctly. You undergo further examinations according to your individual schedule.

Platysmaplasty techniques and other types of neck lift surgery

Currently, there are two platysmaplasty techniques:

  1. Medial platysmaplasty. It’s used to remove wrinkles on the neck. Plastic surgery with an incision beneath the chin will also remove skin laxity, a double/triple chin, or ‘turkey neck’. Medial platysmaplasty will rejuvenate your face by firming the jawline and chin contours.
  2. Lateral platysmaplasty is most often performed in conjunction with a neck lift. It’s indicated if you have evident age-related changes and platysmal bands. The surgeon hides incisions behind the auricles. By the way, lateral platysmaplasty is an integral part of the SMAS facelift.
    .

To achieve the best results and the optimal chin angle, the surgeon uses both platysmaplasty techniques and such types of plastic surgery as liposuction (removing excess fat).

Platysmaplasty: before and after surgery

Preparations for neck lift surgery take 14 days, while platysmoplasty itself takes an hour on average. You’ll be discharged on the second day after surgery, while you need to spend the first day in an individual recovery room. For 2 weeks, you must come for dressings and wear a special neck corset (elastic bandage). The stitches are removed in 7–10 days. You’ll be able to evaluate the results of your neck lift surgery after 1–2 months.

Contraindications to platysmoplasty

Neck lift surgery isn’t allowed if you have the following conditions or diseases:
• Multiple allergies to local and general anaesthetics
• Infectious skin diseases in the operated area
• Severe diseases of internal organs
• Severe diabetes mellitus
• Untreated thyroid disorders
• Oncological diseases
• Clotting disorders

Neck lift surgery is usually performed in patients aged 40 to 60 years but may be performed at an earlier or later age. If it’s necessary to repair a defect caused by some injury or illness, platysmoplasty is performed upon reaching the age of 18.
